Now that we finally have some privacy, I can ask the really important questions:

What is the difference between a cupcake and a muffin?

... You know, never gave it much thought. But now that I do ... I think it's mostly in terms of which seem more like breakfast and which seem more like dessert. But even that's not quite it, is it?

Language is amusing, any way you come at it.

I thought it was the presense of or lack of frosting.

Someone else says it's about texture.

But they also think carrot cake is good, so their opinion is suspect.

That would be my qualifier as well, I think. As for carrot cake ... largely I agree, but every now and then I'm struck by the strange urge to have a piece. Then it tides me over for a few years or so.

[he raises his eyebrows and drops into a stage whisper, glancing around as though he doesn't want said carrot-cake-lover to overhear] I think it's really more about the cream cheese frosting.

Exactly! [Anakin is not quiet.] I think that is what people like about carrot cake. Not the faux-cakeness.

Well of course, now you've got me wanting a cupcake. I wonder if the little bakery a few blocks from me is open at this hour...

You should check, then go get some if they are still open.

I think I might. If they are, should I pick you up a couple? There are a few bars that never blink when I bring in food. I could trade you a cupcake for a chocolate stout. Bet they'd pair well.

Alcohol messes with my ADHD meds and my ability to control my prosthetic.

I'm 27! I don't look that young!

I see. ... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend. When you get to be my age, everyone looks so damn young. [he flashes a sheepish smile]

I still want to make good on that cupcake, though, if you're interested.

In what world would "Devil's" anything be white and springy? If you mean the cake with the hole in the center, you're thinking of an Angel Food Cake.

Why do people associate sin with sugar?

Probably because it was once a luxury item and seems decadent. It's also not exactly good for you. Though we also associate sugar with fun, frivolity, and childish joy--which are not sins.

I rather thought it was the inclusion of chocolate and butter that made Devil's Food especially sinful.

And here I woud have thought it was the slavery system built up around the cultivation of sugar and chocolate.

But I guess making a natural body response to stimuli a sin makes sense.

I'm not sure if the latter part of that is sarcasm, but I think that's exactly it. It's "sinful" because it makes you happy, contributes to weight gain, and tastes good.

The labeling of items as a Vice or Virtue is often more to do with church or society policing other people's right to outward or "excessive" enjoyment of things, and less to do with actual issues of morality.
