I think the last time I went was when I was nine. Short Sands Beach in Maine.

Jeez, now I want salt water taffy.

phew almost had to do something drastic. But yeah, it'd be fun if we got some of the Different together, I think.

Tell me about it! It would definitely be better than having to see each other at counseling.

And yeah, I'm sure it would be a lot more fun than the support group thing.

[It's a few minutes before Clarence responds.]

Sorry! Wanted to make sure Phil knew I wasn't going to be back for dinner. Where should I meet you?

Oh, well I mean, I don't want to take you away from dinner. We can go tomorrow if that works better.

Don't worry about it. I got some extra cash; we can stop by some hole in the wall before we head back. Get some of the good gyros and hummus.

If you're sure, I think it'd be faster if we just met at the beach?

Fair enough. I'm gonna pack up some stuff for Cheddar and head out in a minute.

[It's a nice night and he needs to get out, so it's nice that Clarence agrees to go with him. It's a little cooler on the shore, but he's brought a jacket and there's just something irresistibly invigorating about a quiet beach at night with nothing but the waves rolling in. An oddly comforting sense of being alone that makes his thoughts wander in a fluid way they'd never be in his room at home.

Elliott turns his back on the ocean with a soft, happy sigh and keeps an eye out for a familiar shadow against the lamplight.]

[Clarence is lucky that Cheddar is docile (or lazy) enough to allow himself to be carried wherever he wants to go, or else taking him outside would be too much of a hassle. But his cat was well-trained from before he was put up for adoption in the pet shop, so Clarence thanked his lucky stars.]

[Hurrying along with a large cat in his arms was a bit tiring, but it was worth it. Soon enough, he was racing along the walkway leading to the beach at large, catching a second wind upon seeing his friend looking his way. He smiled.]

Hey! Sorry for the wait! This lazy butt has to be hauled around like a medieval princess.

[He grins with a wave, then tucks it back into his jacket. Not expecting to run into much of anyone this late at the beach, he ditched his usual gloves and figured the dark would be cover enough as long as it didn't start glowing]

No problem. And hey, free strength training.

[He gives Cheddar an affectionate scritch]

I just needed to get out of the house I think, so thanks for coming with me.

[Clarence rolls his eyes, shifting his weight to handle Cheddar pressing up against Elliott's hand. Once the cat had his fill, he placed Cheddar down and clipped the lead to his harness, then Clarence straightened, resettling the light backpack over his shoulder.]

C'mon. Let's walk a bit.

[As they made their way down into the sand, he glanced sideways at his friend.]

Is there some reason you're so in need to get out? Seasonal depression hitting already?

[He shook his head with a smile]

No, nothing like that, just...

[He breathed a sigh, gesturing vaguely] I've been getting the sense that.. something is coming to an end. I don't know if it's because I'm turning 18 in a couple of months, or that all my friends are getting jobs and going to college, or because I'm Different and I'm not sure what it's going to be like by the time the next school year rolls around, but I know it's not gonna be the same as any other year. Just.. a lot, I guess.

[Yeah. He figured if anyone guy was cool with his mom, it was Elliott.]

Hmm. I don't try to think too much about that kind of stuff.

[Cheddar pawed at the sand, eyes blown huge as he frantically attacked the sandy beach. It was a far cry from the calm energy surrounding the teens.]

Or... not that I don't think about it, but I guess I usually try to place those feelings down in my sketch pad. Overwhelming things are easier to deal with when I can see them, even if they're just emotions.

[Elliott huffs a laugh]

I usually just drive myself crazy. But this helps, so thanks.

[He smiles down at Cheddar, content for a few moments to watch him play]

Do you think... we'll be okay in all this?

Guess everyone copes in their own way.

[Cheddar gladly rolled around in the sand, oblivious to the dark turn of their conversation.]

... What do you mean?

[He shrugged, a bit self-conscious]

I mean with the whole.. I don't know, everything that's happening. Our powers, Mr. Martin, those papers.. It feels like something is going to happen. That's kind of why I want to get us all together before it does.
