While we may not have an Arizona, let me assure you Britain is not Downton Abbey or Mary Poppins or whatever you may be picturing.

Those are all British, right?

Idris Elba is from the East End. He'd probably disapprove of being called posh.

In a manner of speaking, I guess the royals are British.

Posh implies luxury in excess, usually with a certain amount of snobbery and upper class condescending. Like Buckingham Palace. The Ritz. Victoria Beckham.

Whereas Idris Elba-- Well, I don't know the man, but he presents himself as somewhat charming and his roles are usually a bit tough; that combination of strikingly handsome and good in a suit that I think makes him a good James Bond sort of fellow. (Oh, but he is rather scrummy in a suit~!)

They are, but I would hardly consider them representative of the whole of British people.

My dear boy, Britain runs on capitalism just like the United States. If your family is wealthy enough, you are whatever class your wealth and lifestyle denotes. In terms of wealth, Mrs. Beckham and Mr. Elba are likely equals. Upper or upper middle class doesn't automatically start handing out peerages and estates. They're just wealthy people.

I believe she was named Posh because of her attitude, but I can't say I was up on gossip rags at the time.

He can be posh to you if you'd like him to be posh.

I feel like you're assigning poshness based on simply being British and therefore having a "fancy" foreign accent, and having money, instead of their public impressions. Posh has a certain "better than you" carriage to it. Even Mary Poppins thought she was "practically perfect in every way."

Ya... I'm lowest class American. There's rich people and not rich people, and that's really the only way to look at wealth over on this side of the pond.
