This is really embarrassing, but I have seriously sprained my ankle. I can more or less manage, but I can't quite manage carrying things, opening doors, and crutches, yet. I can eat take-out and delivery forever to avoid it, but I need some help with the cat-food and cat litter that got dumped just outside my door.

He knew damn well that he needed to eat with the pain killer but he was - not super interested. He sighed and sat up so Bail could sit, and while he was still up reached for the soup.

"Are you sure you're not upset that I didn't call you sooner?"

...He's submissive and in pain. There was going to be some emotional wobbling.

No.

Bail sat down, and grabbed a throw pillow to make his lap even more comfortable.

"I am not upset," he said, reassuringly. "I... just assumed we were at that place in our relationship where we'd call or text one another if something like this happened. If you aren't there, that's okay. It's nothing to be upset over, especially when you're hurt. That comes first."

He doesn't make use of Bail's lap just yet, because he's trying to get at least half that container of soup down and doesn't trust himself not to spill if he's more reclined.

"I'm not sure there is any point where it would have occurred to me naturally. That you asked why I didn't means at least I'll pay attention in the future."

Okay, I'll stop teasing.

When do you want me to come by?

"You know you don't have to drink that soup in one gulp, right?" Bail asked.

He was thinking about a question to ask Ben, he was just trying to find a way to ask it without being misundertsood.

People are gullible. If you sell it right they will believe it.

Oh, okay. I'd be happy to try and help.

Not being rude at all, I'm just overly friendly. I guess you could say I'm making up for the lack of it in certain members of the family. I'm Ellie - I'm, uh, new to the network. I do a lot of volunteer work, so offering help is almost a reflex at this point.

Tomorrow around lunch?

"Yeah, but the faster I'm done the faster I can stop eating and can use you as a pillow."

Probably not the best attitude toward food but there were extenuating circumstances, in a serious way.

He looked curious, though, half-sensing Bail was trying to work up to something.

Ya, I can take the time off. I'll randomly pick a game console to bring. And food, I promised food.

Have a half dozen photos of a plump orange tabby rolling around, about to pounce on a toy, sleeping and just generally being cute.]

I do blame the fact that I'm motherly on the fact that I am a mother! So I suppose that is to be expected.

And that, I am grateful for. It isn't as if I wouldn't help if something happened to you, but I do not wish for it to happen at all. I want you to have a speedy recovery!

Anthony and Alec, the Crowleys? Feel like if you met them I should apologize... more for my half-brother Alec, tho.

Ben, that's a nice solid name. Good to meet you too. I did meals on wheels sort of stuff for elderly & hospice folks, drove people to things if they just got out of hospital. Mum calls it Ellie's Taxi.

That explanation only works for about one in ten of the motherly sorts I know, but I appreciate it all the same.

Hello, Ellie, it's nice to meet you. I don't know if I want to congratulate you or offer my sympathy to you for your family - but I happen to like both of them well enough, so I suppose I'll go for congratulating you.

You seem like a really nice person. I'm sorry you're wrapped up in this mess.

As for the question he was trying to form in his mind...

He decided to just be direct because by now, Bail had learned it was the best approach with Ben.

"How many serious relationships have you had?"
